Wrath of the Righteous Power Builds: Oracle Angel 2.0

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Oracle Angel 2.0 character build

Oracle Angel 2.0 Build Overview

Much like with the Skald 2.0, it’s about time I updated one of my most popular posts, the Oracle Angel build. The original oracle angel will still work great if you don’t have any DLC, but if you do have the DLCs there is a plethora of new abilities, feats, archetypes, spells, equipment, you name it. If interested in my other builds, check out my main Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous page. This is the best build I could find on the internet.

There is an awesome new archetype that came with the Lord of Nothing DLC: the Dual-Cursed Oracle. This archetype is even better at what oracles do, and is frankly a straight upgrade. You get even more revelations, including the OP Misfortune revelation which has the effect of negating 20’s your enemies roll, and you can be good at everything.

There is one note before I get started, as it may directly affect your build:  Greataxes are still terrific, but the Grave Singer greataxe is nerfed because of a change to Improved Critical feat: it no longer increases the threat range to 15-20 for that axe. So it’s no longer the single best melee weapon in the game. We want a high crit range because of how the Outflank feat works, potentially creating looping AoO’s for the whole party. It’s not a big deal since the greataxe is still awesome, but it may be more advantageous to get something we can get to 15-20, such as a scimitar, falchion, fauchard, rapier, kukri, etc. I still love reach weapons, and the fauchard is the sweet spot there.

Level-by-Level Progression

Level 1:

I’ll pick Human which will surprise no one, though it’s not important unless you want an extra feat to take a weapon proficiency. Background depends on what weapon you intend to specialize in. Lumberjack or Warrior of the Linnorm Kings for greataxes, Shackles Corsair for scimitar (and Mobility), Leader for greatsword, or the classic Pickpocket if you want to take an exotic weapon proficiency like fauchard. Whatever you pick, use longspears in early game as they give you reach so you can attack safely behind a tank or pet.

  • Stats:  Str 14 Dex 14 Con 14 Int 8 Wis 8 Cha 19. You have flexibility here, for more balanced stats keep Int and Wis at 10 by dropping Cha to 18, or drop Dex to 12 to main Cha 19. You will have massive buffs to Str so it doesn’t need to be maxed, and your angel spells don’t care about DC, they always do full damage. If you want more of a strength build, pump it up to 18-19 and drop Cha to 14
  • Skills:  Persuasion, UMD (you only need a few ranks), Athletics or Perception
  • Feats:  We will build toward melee power, taking Power Attack and Cleave. This allows 2 attacks at level 1, instead of waiting until level 8
  • Curse:  Just stay away from Wolf-Scarred Face, Blackened and Pranked. I went with Plagued
  • Mystery:  Nature, which is awesome. You have two options here:
    • Revelation:  Animal Companion. I like wolf, but if you choose the horse change some things: take Mobility instead of Athletics, and the Mounted Combat and Spirited Charge feats. This is a nice combination with a longspear, which will let you one-shot most enemies. You’ll be riding the wolf at level 7, it’s up to you
    • Misfortune. It’s super-good and very viable, but level 3 comes so fast I prefer the pet. For Unfair, Misfortune is likely the better option
  • Second Curse:  Lame. You have lots of ways of buffing speed with gear, Haste, or riding your pet. Powerless Prophecy can also work, but you’re at a disadvantage for the first 6 levels which I find annoying. If you are retraining then take PP and just cast Freedom of Movement
  • Spells:  Shield of Faith, Bless
  • Deity:  Anything that allows Good. I have a soft spot for Sarenrae
  • Alignment:  Neutral Good or Lawful Good. LG allows you to increase your saves further via Bestow Grace of the Champion, but it doesn’t matter that much

Level 3:  Cleaving Finish

  • Revelation:  Misfortune, unless you took it at level 1. If so, get your pet now
  • Spells:  Protection from Alignment or Remove Fear, or cast them from scrolls

Level 4:  +Cha for more spell power, or +Str for melee power. I prefer Cha

  • Spells:  Bulls’ Strength, cuz I want that buff right away

Level 5:  This should be your last rank into UMD, your Cha will be so high you don’t need more

  • Feat:  either Improved Initiative or Combat Reflexes, both are great. If you are taking an exotic weapon such as fauchard, taking the proficiency here works
  • Revelation:  Friend to Animals for the huge survivability boost to ALL pets in your party
  • Spell:  Unbreakable Heart to remove confusion. Level 5 or 6 is when your Ill Omen spell really starts to work well. Aid, Lesser Restoration and Protect from Alignment Communal are great picks, or there’s no reason why you can’t pick Animate Dead Lesser

Level 6:  Archon’s Aura or Prayer

  • Before going to level 7 get to Mythic rank 1 first and pick Second Mystery: Battle

Level 7:  Outflank, as every single melee party member and pet wants this feat

  • Revelation:  we want Battle ones now. War Sight is a great pick, but if you prefer more melee power you can go with Weapon Mastery right now instead of level 11
  • Spells:  Divine Favor and Lesser Restoration, either Archon’s Aura or Prayer

Level 8:  Crusader’s Edge, which you want on every melee character and pet all the time

Level 9:  We want to increase spellcasting since next level we are merging with Angel

  • Feat:  Spell Focus Conjuration. This is great for later choosing Spell Specialization
  • Spells:  Remove Curse, Restoration, Freedom of Mvmt, Death Ward, your choice

Level 10:  Spell Resistance, which works well with your Angel abilities

  • Get to Mythic 3 before going to level 11

Level 11:  Spell Specialization: Bolt of Justice

  • Revelation:  Weapon Mastery unless you picked it earlier, in which case go with War Sight
  • Spell Specialization:  keep picking Bolt of Justice until you get Storm of Justice
  • Weapon Focus:  whatever your weapon is, same for Improved Critical
  • Spells:  Protection from Energy Communal, Burst of Glory

Level 12:  Greater Weapon Focus

  • Spells:  Greater Dispel Magic

Level 13:  Metamagic Bolster Spell, which is insane for Bolt and Storm of Justice. Empower or Maximize you can get from staves

  • Revelation:  either Nature’s Whispers or Fortune, I prefer NW as Fortune is more difficult to proc
  • Spells:  Freedom of Mvmt or Restoration, Breath of Life, Heal

Level 14:  Greater Restoration or Bestow Grace of the Champion if you are lawful good

Level 15:  This is a big level. Since you have a ton of Angel stuff I recommend you multiclass for an even more powerful Bolt/Storm. So select Sorcerer: Geomancer to get access to the awesome Geomancy ability (comes with Lord of Nothing DLC). This can be done twice under the effects of Quicken rods, and the Sword of Heaven mythic ability enhances geomancy as well. It’s bonkers!

  • Feat:  Skill Focus Arcana or World for the Loremaster PrC
  • Keep specializing into Storm of Justice
  • Select Arcane Bloodline as it gives the Bloodline Arcane Arcana which increases the DC for Bolt and Storm whenever you use Bolster MM with them
  • Feat:  I took Greater Spell Focus: Conjuration
  • Arcane Bond:  Hare Familiar for yet another big bonus to initiative
  • Pick any class skill, it doesn’t matter
  • Spells:  Mage Armor and True Strike since they don’t rely on caster level

Level 16:  You can either enter the Loremaster PrC or grab another level of Oracle for the last revelation. I prefer Loremaster since the bonuses can make a difference

  • Lots of options. Combat Feats and Rogue Feats are awesome. Shatter Defenses, Improved Cleaving Finish, Weapon Specialization, Opportunist are prime choices. You can take the Trickster Mythic:  Improved Improved Critical as well!
  • Spells:  Eaglesoul, Greater Restoration

Level 17:  Loremaster again. Boon Companion is good here because our pet only scales with Oracle levels

  • Spells:  Frightful Aspect which procs Shatter Defenses. Just remember with the recent patch you still need to hit the enemy before SD takes full effect

Level 18:  Last  Loremaster level. Another Secret…I took Shatter Defenses last time so I’ll take Opportunist, but it’s up to you

  • Spells:  Resurrection and Shield of Law

Level 19:  I go back to Oracle here

  • Feats:  Whatever you’ve wanted but haven’t picked yet. Combat Reflexes, Improved Init, whatever
  • Revelation:  Anything you like. Nature’s Whispers, Fortune, etc
  • Spells:  Mass Heal, amazing spell

Level 20:  Staying with Oracle is good but you can pick Loremaster again if you like, your pet just won’t scale

  • Spell Specialization:  Storm of Justice, the spell damage doesn’t cap

Mythic Path Choices

Level 1:  Ascension: Close to the Abyss if you want melee power and don’t have a reach weapon. Close to the Heavens might be a better way as it gives you more healing potential for your relatively low level.

  • Second Mystery:  Battle, as I said earlier

Level 2:  Extra Mythic Ability, Abundant Casting!

Level 3:  Improved Abundant Casting, and don’t forget to select Mythic Spellbook (Oracle) to merge

Level 4:  Greater Abundant Casting to put you over the top

  • Everlasting Flame is your pick here
  • Spells:  Geniekind if you want to benefit from Master Shapeshifter early.

Level 5:  Starting from here you’ve got options:

  • I go with Ever Ready because I didn’t take Combat Reflexes earlier, and I want him to excel at melee and spell casting. Otherwise, Master Shapeshifter can work because you have access to Geniekind and later Frightful Aspect, I take it at mythic 7
  • Another way to go is to get started on the Enduring Spells line, it’s just not that important because of your high caster level
  • Angel Halo:  Piercing Rays

Level 6:  Improved Critical Mythic or School Mastery Conjuration, I like SMC

  • Abolish Guile

Level 7:  This is where I take Master Shapeshifter but there’s also Mythical Beast, Mythic Charge (if you have a skald), and Archmage Armor

  • Angel Halo:  Solar Winds, which has great synergy with Geomancer

Level 8:  Improved Critical Mythic (my choice), Mythic Initiative or Mythic Power Attack

  • Speed of Light. Doesn’t stack with Haste but it’s still two extra attacks and quickened spells

Level 9:  Mythical Beast or Last Stand, but angels don’t have a problem with dying

  • Whatever you want here

Level 10:  Anything you want

Best Gear and Equipment

Amulet:  Initiative improvement earlier, but ultimately Vallexia’s

Armor does not matter at all. Early go with Mithral chainshirts. Haramaki of Divine Guidance is nice

Robes:  early take ones that increase spell penetration, end up with Robe of the Seven Sins

Belts:  early on take stuff increasing Str, but later you want Belt of the Last of the First Humans

Gloves:  not that important but Fencer’s Gift, Embroidered Gloves are cool

Boots:  Don’t matter much unless you picked Powerless Prophecy curse. Then pick Boots of Free Rein. I save Ronneck’s boots for Dex-based characters

Headband:  Anything increasing charisma, but ultimately Darkness Caress

Glasses/goggles:  Goggles of Piercing Gaze, or Broken Trickster

Cloaks:  of resistance early on, but from ch 4 on you want the Bound of Possibility

Rings:  Triumphant Advance and Bane of Spirit. The Solar Winds ability makes you virtually immune to the HP cost of Bane of Spirit

Bracers:  Just keep the lucky bracers until you get to apply your Cha to AC, then get the Armor bracers

Weapons:  Longspears for ch 1 and until you start riding your animal. Then you have options:

  • If axes, the Grave Singer
  • If Fauchard then Mighty Blow of Good
  • Plague of Madness quarterstaff automatically Empowers and Maximizes spells. Try casting a cantrip 3x out of battle like Light, then start battle ready to go
  • Swapping out PoM for Fiery Spell Weaver quarterstaff during combat for higher caster level is nice

Quickslots:  I like Grandmaster’s Rod, Devouring Lust, Greater Quicken Rod (to cast bolstered Storm of Justice), Jharsygax, whatever spells you want to cast from scrolls, Signet of House Vespertilio or Old Grimoire

Whew. That should be it! This is one of the most fun builds in the game, you will love it. Leave comments or questions below if you like.

  1. So I just started a new playthrough and made your recommendation for stats of: 14 Dex 14 Con 14 Int 8 Wis 8 Cha 19, but I have one point left over, what gives?

    Reply
    • There will be some variations about points left over depending on the race you pick (you can’t get those stats at all if you pick a basic Elf for example). Assuming you picked Human and put the racial bonus into Charisma, you will have one point left over. Where you put it doesn’t much matter, because increasing your Int or Wis to 9 is largely irrelevant.

My goal was to give an idea of what to prioritize. Your stats are important for getting you off to a good start but they aren’t the most important thing ever, especially as you level, gain abilities, and get awesome equipment. Don’t look at it as gospel.

    • Pickpocket is just my preferred pick if you don’t have anything more important to use your background on. There is no background that gives fauchard proficiency, unlike greataxes/scimitar/greatsword, etc.
